綱：細胞体は主に monokinetidsで、細胞の前後端に収束する transverse ribbonがある。 kinetodesmal fibrilは横方向に伸びるが，隣接するfibrilとは重ならない。 oral cilia は通常単純。
亜綱：Oral toxicystsをもつ（ oral dikinetidsの transverse microtubulesの間にある）。 oral ciliaは oral cavityにはなく、口部域の淵にある。 alveoliはあまり発達していない。tela corticalis をもつものが多い。 Rhabdosをもつ。　
目：細胞咽頭は常に存在する。 oral dikinetidsのtransverse microtubular ribbonsとともに細胞内部に達する。

科： 細胞は卵形。 body monokinetidsの側に触手に似た構造がある。
触手を持つ繊毛虫は他に吸管虫綱がいるが， 吸管虫の成体では繊毛が退化しているのに対して，アクチノボリナには触手と繊毛の両方があるのが 特徴といえる。ただし，アクチノボリナの繊毛は他の繊毛虫のものとは印象が随分異なる。 一言でいうと，まばらで長めのものが多く，一見すると鞭毛がたくさん集まったかのように見える。
