綱： 周口域（adoral zone）がよく発達する（＝独特の周口小膜域 （adoral zone of membranelle, AZM）をもつ）。 そこには外部へ伸び出した口部器官や囲口部器官があることが多い。
繊毛は細胞全体に一様にある。 右側には１本または数本の側口繊毛系（paroral ciliature）がある。繊毛系が減少しているものもある。減少した ものの場合は、棘毛となっている。
細胞口は、口腔または漏斗の底にある。 細胞肛門をもたないものが多い。シストを形成する。
ロリカをもつグループもある。大形の種が多く、自由生活をする。
亜綱：繊毛が集まった棘毛（cirri）が細胞表面全体にある。上下に押しつぶされた形をしている。 口部繊毛の左側は、polykinetidsによる collar ないしは lapel を形成する。各々は kinetosomeが 2 or 2.5 列 配列する。口部の右側の繊毛の形態は様々で１〜数個の paroral kinetiesからなる。 １目のみ。
目：亜綱と同じ。
亜目：腹側前方の棘毛は1本ないし多数の明瞭な file（列）を形成する。 （Frontventral cirriが２列またはそれ以上の列できちんと並んで配列している。）
各fileはジグザグ状で腹側全長に及ぶ。
右側 marginal fileの先端部左に 2つの migratory cirriがある。

科：前方の棘毛（Frontal cirri）は frontventral cirriとサイズやパターンが異なる。
口部域はＵ字形ではない。

属：右側縁の files of cirriは2本ないし数本。
