綱：細胞は卵円形（conical＝マツの実）もしくは釣鐘形（bell-shaped）。 細胞体の繊毛はあまりない。 口部繊毛は polykinetidsで、 口部周辺に完全な円形状に配列している。 これらは移動や捕食用に利用される。 多くはプランクトンとして生活している。 （「An Illustrated Guide to the Protozoa」より）
亜綱：細胞口は大形。 ペリクルは肥厚し、多くの種で細胞膜の外側に周皮（perilemma）がある。 DNA合成期、大核には再構成帯（reorganization band）が出現する。 細胞肛門がない。 外洋性。 （「原生動物図鑑」より） （注：外洋性とあるが，淡水にも発見される）。
目：口部の polykinetidsは２つのリングを形成する。一つは先端部にあり移動用（anterior locomotory collar）、 他は腹側にある捕食用のラペル（lapel）である。ロリカは形成しない。プランクトン性。２科。

科：Parateneは mono- or dikinetidsからなる。棘毛には似ていない。parateneには線維状の棒ないし trichites が付属する。いくつかの種では，細胞内に多糖類からなる板（plates）をもつ。

属：後端部が長く伸びる（with long process at rear）。
