綱：多くは大形の細胞で、収縮性に富むものが多い。なかには細胞質内に色素を含むものがいる。 独特の周口小膜域 （adoral zone of membranelle, AZM）をもつが、 繊毛は細胞全体に一様にある。 大核は卵円形か数珠状のものが多い。寄生性・自由生活両方のタイプがある。
亜綱：細胞分裂の際に起こる stomatogenesis の過程で口部装置は退化する (oral regression)。
細胞体の繊毛は monokinetidsか、もしくは dikinetidsか、もしくは polykinetids。
細胞は卵型かやや四角形。上下に平たい。背中には dikinetidsがある。 腹側には棘毛（ cirral polykinetids ）がある。cirriは腹側全体にある。
目：亜綱と同じ。
亜目：口部域と細胞の他の部分の間にくびれはない。

科：左側の縁棘毛（marginal cirri）は少ない（１つの fileのみ）。尾部棘毛はある。
（例外；Certeseiaにはない）
細胞は平ら。口部域は腹側にある。

Certesia属	尾部棘毛（caudal cirri）がない。paroral は大きい。long patch (?)
ディオフリス属	尾部棘毛（caudal cirri）はやや右側へずれる。 paroralはおそらく２列の monokinetid files 大核はしばしば数珠状。
ユープロテス属	尾部棘毛（caudal cirri）はほぼ左右対照にある。後端部に位置する。 oral cavity の右縁に１つの大きな paroral polykinetid がある。 大核はＣ型のものが多い（Ｔ字型のものなどもいる）。
