綱：多くは大形の細胞で、収縮性に富むものが多い。なかには細胞質内に色素を含むものがいる。 独特の周口小膜域 （adoral zone of membranelle, AZM）をもつが、 繊毛は細胞全体に一様にある。 大核は卵円形か数珠状のものが多い。寄生性・自由生活両方のタイプがある。
亜綱：細胞分裂の際に起こる stomatogenesis の過程で口部装置は退化する (oral regression)。
細胞体の繊毛は monokinetidsか、もしくは dikinetidsか、もしくは polykinetids。
細胞は卵型かやや四角形。上下に平たい。背中には dikinetidsがある。 腹側には棘毛（ cirral polykinetids ）がある。cirriは腹側全体にある。
目：亜綱と同じ。
亜目：口部域と細胞の他の部分の間にくびれはない。

科：左側の縁棘毛（marginal cirri）も尾部棘毛もない。
細胞は平ら。口部域は腹側にある。細胞は小さい（通常は50μｍ以下）。
細胞背面はしばしば尖る。thigmotactic；底着性（benthic）。

Euplotaspis属	細胞口の左縁に明瞭な left-serial oral polykinetidsがある。Cionaに共生。
アスピディスカ属	Left-serial polykinetids は stomatogenesisの際に 分離 (separate ?)する。 自由生活。しばしば sapropelic。
