綱：多くは大形の細胞で、収縮性に富むものが多い。なかには細胞質内に色素を含むものがいる。 独特の周口小膜域 （adoral zone of membranelle, AZM）をもつが、 繊毛は細胞全体に一様にある。 大核は卵円形か数珠状のものが多い。寄生性・自由生活両方のタイプがある。

亜綱：細胞は卵円形（conical＝マツの実）もしくは釣鐘形（bell-shaped）。 細胞体の繊毛はあまりない。 口部繊毛は polykinetidsで、 口部周辺に完全な円形状に配列している。これらは移動や捕食用に利用される。 多くはプランクトンとして生活している。 （「An Illustrated Guide to the Protozoa」より）
細胞口は大形。 ペリクルは肥厚し、多くの種で細胞膜の外側に周皮（perilemma）がある。 DNA合成期、大核には再構成帯（reorganization band）が出現する。 細胞肛門がない。外洋性。 （「原生動物図鑑」より） 目：亜綱と同じ。
