Prorodon 綱：細胞体は主に monokinetidsで、放射状の transverse ribbonがある。 細胞口は前端部ないしその近傍にある。 （「An Illustrated Guide to the Protozoa」より）
繊毛は房状ないし帯状に配列することが多い。 毒胞をもたないものもあるが、毒胞をもつものは口域、吻部、触手内にある。 大型の細胞が多い。肉食性。
目：細胞口は前端部、ないしその近傍にある。細胞体の周囲にbrosse of kinetidsがある。 突出体として、extraoral toxicystsをもつ。
科：Brosse kinetidsは oral dikinetidsもしくはその腹側の端から伸びる。細胞口の周囲を 取り囲まない。somatic toxicysts がある。

属：３列のdikinetidsからなるBrosse filesが細胞の縦軸方向に伸びる。

細胞体は楕円形かもしくは幅広のピーナッツ形。活発に泳ぐときには、体軸を中心に回転 しながら前進する。体繊毛は短く、繊毛列線上に一様に密生している。 内質部はしばしば共生藻を含んでいるため、緑色をすることが多い。

細胞口：体の前端部より少しはずれた位置にある。細胞口の横断面は長楕円形。 細胞咽頭にはかご状の特殊な食物摂取器官がある。
核：楕円球形で細胞の中央付近に１個ある。その周囲に１個の小核がある。
収縮胞：細胞体の後端部に１個ある。
生息域：主に淡水の停滞した場所に多くみられる。

P. diaphanus 細胞は小さく(50 μｍ) 卵形で透明, 繊毛列は22本〜24本, mucocystsが皮層にみえる, 先端部にある細胞口は大きく，トリコシストがある, 細胞口周辺の繊毛はやや長い, 大核は大きい, 収縮胞は後端部 (Carey, 1992).
P. discolor 細胞は卵形で長さは100-130μｍ。 繊毛列は45-55。大核は楕円形。小核は半球状。 収縮胞は細胞末端にある。淡水性。汽水域にも生息。(Kudo, 1966) 後端部はやや尖る, 90-110 μｍ, 先端部の細胞口にあるbasketはよく発達する, mucocystsがある, 大核は卵形で中心部に核がある (Carey, 1992).

P. morgani 細胞長 250-400 μｍ; 細胞は円筒形, 大核は１個, 尾部繊毛なし, cell body cylindrical and plump (Carey, 1992).
