綱：細胞外に厚く丈夫な殻（shell, test, tectum）もしくは石英や 珪藻の殻などの付着物をまぜた 複合的な膜を形成する。葉状仮足をもち、殻と内部の細胞膜との間には隙間がある。 糸状仮足とまぎらわしい仮足をもつものも多い。

目：殻の開口は１個のみ。
亜目：殻はキチン質の場合とそうでない場合がある。硬い。plate, scale, or siliceous granulesが表面に付着。 仮足は指状（digitate）。

科：Pseudostome は狭い卵型ないしスリット状。
Pseudostome は先端部にある。殻の粒子は四角形ではない。

Heleopora属	殻は卵形。
アミカムリ属	殻はフラスコ形。首のあるものもいる。 Group Dentistomes: pseudostomeの境界に scaleもしくは teethがある。 Group Hyalostomes: pseudostomeの境界に scaleはない。
