ポリキスティナ、パエオダリア、アカンタリアの３綱は海産でプランクトン的生活をするグループ。 これらはかつて放散虫綱あるいは放散虫目（Radiolaria）としてひとつのグループにまとめられてい たが、電子顕微鏡観察の結果から、これらの類似性は収斂進化の結果であって、おたがいの関係は うすいことがわかってきた。
太陽虫綱のみが淡水性。
