綱：球形で，核は細胞の中心に１個か（Actinophrys），または，細胞の周辺に複数の核がある。
顆粒を含んだ軸足（axopod）を持つ。 軸足の根元は先端部より太い。
軸足の内部にある軸糸微小管 （axonemal microtubule）の基部は核膜の外膜に接している。
突出体（extrusome）は顆粒状。
ミトコンドリアは管状のクリステをもつ。
二分裂で増える。有性生殖はシスト内で起こる pedogamy（autogamy）が知られている。
Resting cysts は spicule をもつ。

目：軸足の形成部位は核膜ないしはその周辺部にある。 MTOC は perinuclear space に層状にあり，微小管はたがいにコイル状のもので interlocking されている。
濃度の高い突出体（放出体）が均一にある。殻をもたない。核は１個ないし数個。

属：核は細胞の中心部に１個だけ。

Actinophrys sol 細胞体の直径は50μｍ前後だが，サイズは様々。殻はない。 ectoplasmには vacuoleがみられる。内部（endoplasm）には小さな vesicleがある。 核は中央部にあり，直径は10μｍ程。収縮胞は数個。 類似種：A. vesiculata
