自由遊泳型と柄付型（海産）がある。
通常は，シリカ状か有機質の spicule or scaleによって被われている。
軸足（axopod）は非常に収縮性がある。 そのまわりにある rheoplasm では キネトシスト （kinetocysts）があり，皮層には 粘液胞（mucocyst）がある。
通常，核は１個のみだが，いくつかの属では複数個ある。
二分裂，あるいは多分裂で増殖する。 細胞質融合（plasmogamy）を行なう。
目：軸足の形成部位は核膜ないしはその周辺部にある。 MTOC は核膜の外側にあるが，特別な構造は見られない。 Kinetocystsをもつ。有機質でできた孔の開いた殻をもつ。多くは柄をもつ。

属：中空の柄をもつ。多角形の孔があいた有機質の殻（capsule）の中に近接して細胞体がある。 群体を作ることもあるが，単独でも生活する。
