綱：周口域（adoral zone）がよく発達する（＝独特の周口小膜域（adoral zone of membranelle, AZM）をもつ）。そこには外部へ伸び出した口部器官や囲口部器官があることが多い。
繊毛は細胞全体に一様にある。右側には１本または数本の側口繊毛系（paroral ciliature）がある。繊毛系が減少しているものもある。減少したものの場合は、棘毛となっている。
細胞口は、口腔または漏斗の底にある。細胞肛門をもたないものが多い。シストを形成する。
ロリカをもつグループもある。大形の種が多く、自由生活をする。
目：小さな卵型の細胞。kinetidsは monokinetidsのみ、もしくは右側から背中にかけて dikinetid， 5～8（ふつうは6個）の polykinetidsが細胞口の左側にある。
多数の 2n の大核が有糸分裂する。
１科１属のみ。
