綱：口部装置がある場合は、body cilia とは明瞭に区別される。 １つのparoral dikinetidと多数の polykinetidsによって構成される。 口部構造は腹側の oral cavity内、あるいは infundibulum内にある。 body ciliaは monokinetids で前方に向かう overlapping kinetodesmal fibrilsと divergent postciliary ribbons、radial transverse ribbonsが付属する。 caudal ciliaがあるのが普通。
生活環は複雑。あるグループは、餌の量によってmicrostomeと macrostome の２つの状態をとる。 cystを形成し tomontと呼ばれる状態になり、その中で細胞分裂して tomites となることもある。 脱シストすると therontとなり、やがて trophontとなる。

亜綱：細胞は３部分からなる。 1）口部域（oral）； peristome は明瞭で、周囲に dikinetid fileとoral polykinetid がある。 polykinetidは細胞口（cytostome）があるoral cavity（ infundibulum）から出ている。 2）aboral；suction-disc（scopula） を形成するkinetosomes、もしくは、固着性の種では stalkを分泌する。 3）telotroch band；mobile speciesでは常に繊毛があるが、固着性の種では mobileな時期にのみある。口部域は伸縮することもできる。いくつかの種ではロリカを形成する。
目：亜綱と同じ。

科：成熟trophontは固着性。細胞体は短い。Ｃ字型の大核。大半はロリカをもたない。 stalkがないが，aboral endが引っ張られてstalkに似た形をしている。 peristomal discにstalkがつかない。
