２本の不等長の鞭毛をもつ ameboflagellates。管状のクリステをもつミトコンドリアを数個もつ。 Cercomonasの大きさは10〜15 μｍで，細胞先端部から２本の鞭毛がでる。 細胞は梨形，ないしシリンダ状だが，細胞後端部はアメーバ状態。 先端部の鞭毛基部付近にある細胞膜に結合した構造があり、これが核をキャップ状に包んでいる。 核の後端部に収縮胞がある。
当初はボド類に属していたが（Hollande 1952）， Vickerman（1976）は，キネトプラスト がないこと，および，鞭毛の基部が副基体に接していることから独立させた。 淡水性ないしは coprozoicで，シストを形成するものもい

属： 細胞は小さい（10-15μｍ）。２本の鞭毛が細胞先端部からでる。細胞は梨形，ないし円筒形だが， 後半部はアメーバ状。
