綱：葉状仮足をつくる。軸糸はない。一時期鞭毛をもつものもあるが、子実体はつくらない。
亜綱：細胞外に厚く丈夫な殻（shell, test, tectum）もしくは石英や 珪藻の殻などの付着物をまぜた 複合的な膜を形成する。葉状仮足をもち、殻と内部の細胞膜との間には隙間がある。 糸状仮足とまぎらわしい仮足をもつものも多い。

目：殻の開口が複数ある。
