綱：葉状仮足をつくる。軸糸はない。一時期鞭毛をもつものもあるが、子実体はつくらない。
亜綱：細胞外に厚く丈夫な殻（shell, test, tectum）もしくは石英や 珪藻の殻などの付着物をまぜた 複合的な膜を形成する。葉状仮足をもち、殻と内部の細胞膜との間には隙間がある。 糸状仮足とまぎらわしい仮足をもつものも多い。
目：殻の開口は１個のみ。
亜目：殻はキチン質。pliable or 硬い。scale or palteはない。固形物に付着。仮足は指状（digitate）。

科：柔らかいTectumがある。顆粒が封入されている。明瞭な pseudostomeをもたない。

コクリオポディウム属 　Cochliopodium	Tectumは柔らかい。punctate, 棘状ないし folded。小隆起のまま移動。仮足は透明。突起状（conical）。tectumの下にある。
ゴセビア属 　Gocevia	Tectumはゲル状。棘なし。apunctate。
