綱：葉状仮足をつくる。軸糸はない。
亜綱：殻をつくらない。狭義のアメーバ類。
目：多くは単核。ミトコンドリアがある。 鞭毛をもたない。
　　核分裂は mesomitotic。有性生殖は知られていない。
亜目：移動時の細胞は円筒状で，分岐する種としない種がいる。 仮足は顆粒を含み，先端部には透明冠がみられる。 通常，核は１個だが，まれに多核のものもいる。核分裂は mesomitotic。

科：仮足は分岐し，顆粒を含む。 ただし，その先端部は透明で半球状。 from 「An Illustrated Guide to the Protozoa」

属：仮足は円筒形で稜がある（ridged）; 多核

C. carolinense 通称「giant ameba」と呼ばれる。Amoeba proteus よりも大きい。 仮足が複数の時で1000-2000 μ; 仮足が１本の時1000-5000μ; 仮足は円筒形で稜がある（ridged）; 先端には透明冠 (clear caps)がある; ウロイドは桑実状; 外質は透明, 内質には顆粒がある; 核は円形ないし楕円形（18-30 μ, 厚さ11-12μ)でたくさん の核がある, 通常1000個かそれ以上; シストは球状だが希 (300-600μ); 細胞分裂は plasmotomy による; 餌としてはゾウリムシ (Paramedium caudatum) が最適 (Illustrated Guide,1985)。 C. illinoisense
