綱：不等毛植物の仲間。細胞壁が硅酸化されて、そこに複雑な模様のこまかい孔（真孔 eupole）があいている。
淡水にも海水にも見出される代表的な植物プランクトン。中心目は放射相称で、羽状目は左右相称。単細胞だが しばしば群体をつくる。

目：一般に殻の構造は線対称。卵生殖をしない。
亜目：殻は縦溝をもつ。

科：発達した縦溝をもつ。縦溝に間板（fibula）や管状（canal）構造がある。
被殻は長軸に対し相称（ユミケイソウを除く）。縦溝は竜骨（keel）上にある。
溝は突き出た翼管上にあり，殻縁に沿って殻全体をとりまく。
