綱：口部装置がある場合は、body cilia とは明瞭に区別される。 １つのparoral dikinetidと多数の polykinetidsによって構成される。 口部構造は腹側の oral cavity内、あるいは infundibulum内にある。
body ciliaは monokinetids で前方に向かう overlapping kinetodesmal fibrilsと divergent postciliary ribbons、radial transverse ribbonsが付属する。 caudal ciliaがあるのが普通。
生活環は複雑。あるグループは、餌の量によってmicrostomeと macrostome の２つの状態をとる。 cystを形成し tomontと呼ばれる状態になり、その中で細胞分裂して tomites となることもある。 脱シストすると therontとなり、やがて trophontとなる。
亜綱：細胞全体に繊毛がある。 通常，右側に paroral dikinetidが，左側に oral polykinetidsが 1-3列ある。目：右側のoral dikinetidは a, b & c segmentsからなる。細胞体は dikinetids。 stomatogenesisは通常，口部域すぐ後の c segmentか scuticovestigeの kinetosomesから始まる。
Body ciliaの dikinetids 部分は 細胞体の半分以上を占める。共生をするものにはThigmotactic field？を作るものもある。 多くは海産か汽水性。自由生活種の他に寄生性（もしくは共生）のものもいる。
亜目：Paroral dikinetids は、他の口部構造よりも短い。 また、paroral dikinetidsからribbed wallが発達することはない。科：Oral polykinetidsの並ぶ方向は，細胞体の長軸方向とほぼ同じ。
Oral polykinetiesは２列のみ。
