細胞の外形は細長く、平らなものが多い。伸縮性があり触刺激に敏感に反応する。 繊毛は細胞表面全体に一様にある。口域は前端部か腹面にある。kinetidsは重複した postciliary ribbonsか、 spirotrichの dikinetidsに似た postciliary fibrilsからなる。
大核は２個かそれ以上あるが、各々は 2n （もしくはそれ以上）のDNA量を含む。Protocruzia属を 除いて他は、細胞分裂ごとに分裂した小核の一部が大核に分化する。 小核の分裂は eumitosisである。 例外は、Protocruzia属で、この属では多数の 2n の大核が有糸分裂する。
細胞表面には毒胞が散在する。背域に ミューラー嚢（Muller's vesicle） をもつものがいる。肉食性のものが多い。

目： 細胞は平ら。繊毛は細胞体の右側に集まっている。 細胞口の繊毛は、単純な dikinetidsで、口部の窪みに沿って配置されている。

科： 細胞は細長く，平ら。先端部に rostrum がある。 背域にミューラー嚢 （Muller's vesicle; Mullerian vesicle）がある。

属： 口部域は長い。 管状の空所は oral dikinetidの延長によって裏打ちされていない。 in brackish，海産。 （「An Illustrated Guide to the Protozoa」より）
