門：葉緑体中にクロロフィル a, bを含み，光合成によりα-1, 4グルカンを主成分とするデンプンをつくり，葉緑体内に蓄える。

綱：多くは４本の鞭毛をもつが、なかには１、２、４または８本の鞭毛をもつものがいる。 （ ただし、長さについては、不等長と説明があるものと（「原生動物学入門」）等長としてある ものがある（「原生動物図鑑」）。）
各鞭毛が、三つの型の鱗と鱗原基、または、 細毛（微細なマスティゴネマ＝側毛）に覆われている のが特徴である。鞭毛だけでなく細胞全体も類似の鱗片で覆われている。この特徴により、 プラシノ藻（プラシノモナス）は、緑藻類と区別されるが、光合成色素や葉緑体の構造には 共通点がみられる。すなわち、葉緑体はクロロフィルa, b, β-カロチンを含み、二重膜からなる被膜 に覆われている。貯蔵物質はプラスチド（葉緑体）内のデンプンである。
