綱：葉状仮足をつくる。軸糸はない。一時期鞭毛をもつものもあるが、子実体はつくらない。
亜綱：細胞外に厚く丈夫な殻（shell, test, tectum）もしくは石英や 珪藻の殻などの付着物をまぜた 複合的な膜を形成する。葉状仮足をもち、殻と内部の細胞膜との間には隙間がある。 糸状仮足とまぎらわしい仮足をもつものも多い。
目：殻の開口は１個のみ。
亜目：殻はキチン質。pliable or 硬い。scale or palteはない。固形物に付着。仮足は指状（digitate）。

科：Testは硬く，キチン質。often areolar, smooth。 pseudostomeは腹側にあり明瞭。丸い。

属：Testの形は様々。キチン質。二核（binucleate）。
Group Vulgaroides：Testは半球状。高さは最大直径の1/2〜4/5。eternal shelf or rimがない。
種：Pseudostomeは丸く，径10-20μｍ。殻は finely areolar，黄色ないし褐色。淡水性。
