1. 形態
   外部形態
   細胞は楕円形で長径はおよそ 0.3 mm （120〜210μｍ，Wichterman 1986）。 bursariaグループ（P. bursaria, P. trichium, P. calkinsi, P. polycaryum, P. woodruffi) の中では一番大きい（Wichterman 1986）。
   中ほどに細胞口があり、それに向かって先端部からゆるくラセン状の 溝がある。このため、細胞全体にある繊毛の運動によって生ずる遊泳パターンもゆるいラセン形を描く。
   泳ぐときは，左回りのラセン状の遊泳軌跡を描く。

   内部形態
   収縮胞は２個。細胞の先端部と後端部に位置する。
   小核の数はさまざま。最大８個。vesicular type（aurelia typeともいう）。サイズは約4μｍ。
