このグループには、かつては様々な「鞭毛をもったアメーバ細胞」が含まれていた。 しかし、その後、HistomonasとDientamoebaは trichomonads（トリコモナス）に、 TetramitusとNaegleriaは Schizopyrenida（ネグレリア目）に配置替えされた。 DimorphaとHeliobodoには内部に軸足があるので、これらは太陽虫の一部（ Centrohelida） に配置替えされるだろう。他には Cercomonadidaや Heteromitaに移ったものもいる。 残りのものも今後の研究次第で配置替えになる可能性もある。
ということでこのマスチゲラ目はいずれは解消される運命にあり、現在は歴史的な経緯で残されている だけである。（「Illustrated guide to the protozoa」）

属：鞭毛は１本，長く核につながっている。単核。仮足は指状 (Kudo, 1966)。

M. aspera	移動時の細胞長 150-200 μm, 幅 50 μm; 細胞は長くのび先端部が狭まる, 後端部は丸いか葉状; 仮足は細くまっすぐのびる; 収縮胞は２個 (Kudo, 1966).
M. longifilum	移動時の細胞長 28 μm; 細長く細胞質は透明; 鞭毛は細胞長の約２倍; 仮足は少なく短い; 収縮胞が先端部にある (Kudo, 1966).
M. setosa	細胞長は最大 140 μm (Kudo, 1966).
M. hylae	オタマジャクシの後腸にいる; 細胞長 80-135 μm, 幅 21-31 μm;
