綱：葉状仮足をつくる。軸糸はない。
亜綱：殻をつくらない。狭義のアメーバ類。
目：多くは単核。ミトコンドリアがある。 鞭毛をもたない。
核分裂は mesomitotic。有性生殖は知られていない。

亜目： 移動時の細胞は円筒状で，分岐する種としない種がいる。仮足は顆粒を含み，先端部には透明冠がみられる。 通常，核は１個だが，まれに多核のものもいる。核分裂は mesomitotic。
Monopodial。仮足はめったに形成されない。先端部がややふくらんだ状態で移動する。原形質流動は連続して起こる。

属： 細胞の長さは幅の６〜９倍。 移動時にみられる透明冠（hyaline cap）は幅の１〜２倍の長さがある (How to know the ptozoa, 1979)。 シストは単核(Illustrated Guide, 1985)。

H. cantabrigiensis 細胞長は16-33μｍ。L/B値は通常4.5。最大6.5。透明域あり。 シストは7-13μｍ。淡水性。 H. vermiformis 細胞長は12-33μｍ。L/B値は通常6。最大8.4。透明域あり。 シストは4-9.5μｍ。淡水性。
