綱：細胞の全周囲に放射状に 有軸仮足をだす。 この仮足は顆粒を含み、しばしば吻合する。 有軸仮足以外に、糸状仮足や一時的に葉状仮足を形成するものもいる。 突出体（放出体, extrusome）として， キネトシスト（kinetocyst, conicyst） をもつ。大部分は淡水性。

目：細胞質内には明瞭な軸足の形成部位が見えない。

柄はない。自由遊泳。skeletonがある。

属：外被の成分は珪素質。 tangential scales (or pearls)と放射状の棘。
