門/綱：運動性単細胞の藻類。葉緑体をもたず浸透性または摂食性の従属栄養を営むものもいる。 鞭毛は細胞前端部の消化道から１〜３本出ていて1本は片羽型（１列の側毛）。
中間期の核内で染色体が凝縮したまま。変形運動（ユーグレナ運動）をする。
緑色種は、道管基部付近に眼点をもつ。また、眼点に近接した鞭毛上に感光点（flagellar swelling, paraflagellar body）がある。
ペリクル（細胞表層の膜状外被）はラセン状に走る多数の帯状部（strips）で構成されており、 各々の接着部分が線条（striae）として観察される。

目：無色で摂食性の従属栄養を行なう。そのための特異な摂食小器官をもつ。
鞭毛は１本あるいは２本。２本の場合、不等毛で太さも異なる。
遊泳時１本の長くて太い鞭毛は前方に伸びたままで全体は動かない。 先端部のみが振動する。 細胞は滑走運動を行なう。淡水性と海水性の両方がいる。

科：目と同じ（？）。

属：葉緑体はない。フラスコ形で入り口が広がる。そこから１本の鞭毛が伸びる。 鞭毛は細胞内の1/3まで達する。

U. cyclostomus	25-50μｍ。淡水性。
U. sabulosus	紡錘形で，表面に砂粒等が付着している。50-60μｍ。
