綱：不等毛植物の仲間。細胞壁が硅酸化されて、そこに複雑な模様のこまかい孔（真孔 eupole）があいている。
淡水にも海水にも見出される代表的な植物プランクトン。中心目は放射相称で、羽状目は左右相称。単細胞だが しばしば群体をつくる。

目：一般に殻の構造は点対称。卵生殖をする。
亜目：縁辺突起をもたない。極性がある。
極性は一極性で，細胞は貫殻軸方向に発達。

ピクシラ科 　Pyxillaceae	すべて化石種。 殻は上下で形が異なることが多い。 胞紋は外側に師板，内側に開口をもつ偽小室（pseudoloculus）。 頂部に１個の唇状突起。
ツツガタケイソウ科 　Rhizosoleniaceae	ほとんどが現生種。 殻は上下同じ。偽小室はない。 頂部に１個の唇状突起。
