綱：不等毛植物の仲間。細胞壁が硅酸化されて、そこに複雑な模様のこまかい孔（真孔 eupole）があいている。
淡水にも海水にも見出される代表的な植物プランクトン。中心目は放射相称で、羽状目は左右相称。単細胞だが しばしば群体をつくる。

目：一般に殻の構造は点対称。卵生殖をする。
亜目：殻は縁辺突起をもつ（一部退化）。一般に放射相称で極性をもたない。

科：唇状突起のみ。胞紋は内側に開口し，外側に師板をもつ。[SEM]
殻は長い円筒形で，糸状の群体を形成。 休眠胞子をつくる。
偽眼域をもつものもいる。
