綱：不等毛植物の仲間。細胞壁が硅酸化されて、そこに複雑な模様のこまかい孔（真孔 eupole）があいている。
淡水にも海水にも見出される代表的な植物プランクトン。中心目は放射相称で、羽状目は左右相称。単細胞だが しばしば群体をつくる。

目：一般に殻の構造は線対称。卵生殖をしない。
亜目：殻は縦溝をもたない。

プロトラフィス科 　Protoraphidaceae	殻はＳ字形の軸域（axial area）をもち，両極に１列又は融合した唇状突起がある。
イタケイソウ科 　Diatomaceae	Ｓ字形の軸域がない。一方の極に１個の唇状突起がある。
