Distinct from Chlamydomonas by the possession of four flagella, emerging
at right angle from each other thus forming cruciform; cell body droplet form, spherical, ellipsoidal,
ovoid, inverted ovoid, spindle-shaped, or cylindrical; cellwall variable in thickness;
papilla present/absent; chloroplast essentially cup-shaped, but variable; one or
many pyrenoids present; stigma mostly present, rarely absent;
two or four contractile vacuoles apical
