Genus: Four flagella of equal length inserted close together into an anterior papilla; contractile vacuole anterior (An illustrated guide to freshwater zooplankton in Japan, 2000).
Distinct from Chlamydomonas by the possession of four flagella, emerging at right angle from each other thus forming cruciform; cell body droplet form, spherical, ellipsoidal, ovoid, inverted ovoid, spindle-shaped, or cylindrical; cellwall variable in thickness; papilla present/absent; chloroplast essentially cup-shaped, but variable; one or many pyrenoids present; stigma mostly present, rarely absent; two or four contractile vacuoles apical (Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa 9, Chlorophyta I, 1983).
