門/綱：２つのうねりのある溝が細胞表面にあり、１本は細胞の赤道上に（ 横溝　cingulumという）、他方は縦に伸びている（縦溝　Sulcus）。 この溝に沿って鞭毛が配置されている。鞭毛の長さは不等長。 鞭毛は羽型と片羽型（または裸）のものがそれぞれ１本ずつある。 セルロース板でできた硬い殻をもつ。皮質（cortex）には放出体として 毛胞（trichocyst；糸胞ともいう）がある。 収縮胞をもたない。海産のものでは部分的に肥大した水嚢（Pusulen; pusules） をもち浸透圧調節を行っている。 数珠状の核をもつ。ヒストンがほとんどない。分裂の中間期でも染色体は凝縮したまま。 核分裂の際にクロマチンは紡錘糸と結合せず核膜と結合する。

目：生活環の大部分を遊泳性で過ごす。
鞭毛は細胞腹部から出る。横溝がある。細胞外被に鎧板がある。
第一頂板が非対称形，底板と後挿間板が計２〜３枚ある。そのうちの１枚が背中側にずれる。

ツノモ属 　Ceratium	細胞は背腹方向につぶれた形。前方の殻板には角がある。後方の殻板には１〜３個の角がある。 後方の角はそのまま後方にまっすぐ伸びるものと，曲がって前方に向かうものとがある。 横溝はほぼ中央部にある。葉緑体は黄褐色。 Ref. Taylor (1976); Dodge & Crawford (1970)
