目：２本または４本の等長鞭毛をもつ。葉緑体はクロロフィルa, b, β-カロチンを含み、草緑色。二重膜の被膜 に覆われている。貯蔵物質はプラスチド（葉緑体）内のデンプンである。
このグループは、クラミドモナスのように単細胞の状態で生活するものもいれば、多細胞の群体を形成する ものもいる。群体のサイズ（細胞数）は、ゴニウム（Gonium）、ユードリナ（Eudorina）、 プレオドリナ（Pleodorina）、ボルボックス（Volvox）の順に多い。
一部には無色で従属栄養のものもいる（ポリトマ Polytoma、ヒアロゴニウム Hyalogoniumなど）。

亜目：細胞壁はない。

属：細胞は卵形ないし梨形。後端部は尖る。４本の等長鞭毛をもつ。 細胞は無色。plastidには光合成ラメラがないが，デンプンを貯える。 眼点はあるものとないものがいる。縦分裂をする。
