Poteriodendron もとは襟鞭毛虫の中に配置されていた。
約40種 (Moestrup & Thomsen, 1976)。
単独またはコロニーを形成する。キチン質でできた花瓶状の殻ないし ロリカをもつ。 ちなみに、襟鞭毛虫や 黄金色植物（Chrosomonads）の 珪質鞭毛藻（虫）類のそれらは 珪素質でできている。
単独の細胞には、不等鞭毛がつく。短い方の鞭毛は裸で、細胞の溝に沿って後方に伸び、ロリカ内で細胞を 固定したり、ロリカに引き込んだりするのに役立っている。長い方の鞭毛は、前に向かって伸びる。これに １ないし２列の mastigonemesがついており、 バクテリアや他の微生物を捕食するのに使われる。
細胞長はおよそ5 μｍ。自由遊泳をしたり、殻が様々なものに付着しているものもある。 海洋および淡水性の従属栄養プランクトンである。

Bicosoeca は名前が統一されておらず、Bicoeca または Bikoeca と書くこともある。一般に、 植物系の分類学者は Bicosoeca (および "bicosoecids", Bicosoecaceae, etc.)、を用いる が、動物系の分類学者は Bicoeca (および"bicoecids", etc.)を用いる傾向がある。

多くの研究者は bicoecidsが chrysomonads(黄金色植物) に系統的に近いのではと考えている（Bourreely, 1968; Kristiansen, 1972; Sleigh, 1973; Corliss, 1981; Margulis and Schwartz, 1982)。類似点は，両グループとも，似た場所から heterokont undulipodiaが出ている。 しかし，bicoecidsのkinetid-associated microtubulesは chrysomonads よりもかなり複雑である。 chrysomonadsの仲間である Stokesiellaのロリカはbicoecidsのものと形態的によく似ているが，成分は キチン質ではなく珪素質である。また，bicoecidsは葉緑体を持たない点でも異なる。 ( Dyer B.D., Phylum Zoomastigina: Class Bicoecids, In Margulis et al., Handbook of Protoctista, p. 191-193, 1991)
