綱：規則的に配列した放射状の棘があり，それらは細胞の中心部で結合する。 棘は硫酸ストロンチウム（strontium sulfate）でできている。
細胞は薄いカプセル状の膜で包まれている（ものがある？）。

目：中央部で融合した棘針が20本。カプセル状の膜はない。栄養成長期の核は大きい。

Astrolithiidae科	20本の放射状の棘針は等長。
Amphilithiidae科	20本の放射状の棘針の長さは不揃い。
Pseudolithiidae科	20本の放射状の棘針は等長。中心部で融合している。
