繊毛が集まった棘毛（cirri）が細胞表面全体にある。上下に押しつぶされた形をしている。 口部繊毛の左側は、polykinetidsによる collar ないしは lapel を形成する。各々は kinetosomeが 2 or 2.5 列 配列する。口部の右側の繊毛の形態は様々で１〜数個の paroral kinetiesからなる。
腹側の棘毛は明瞭な fileにならない（例外：Gastrostyla）。
腹側前方の棘毛（frontventral cirri）は腹側全体に分散している。

属：大核は２個（まれに４個）。
右側縁のfileは１列のみ。transverse cirriは１グループ。ない場合もある。
縁にある cirri（mariginal cirri）は後端部までは並ばない（not confluent）。
oral cavityは広い。顕著な尾部棘毛（caudal cirri）をもつ（通常３本）。
種：細胞長100-300μｍ。淡水性。
