Penium margaritaceum pecies: Cell body cylindrical, slightly depressed at center, 68-185 μm long, 14-22 μm wide; chloroplasts with longitudinal ridges; cell wall with small granules arranged longidudinally or sometimes irregularly; zygospores spherical or slightly elongated (Photomicrographs of the Fresh-water Algae, 1985).
