Subgenus [Eucosmarium]: Cell body dorso-ventrally compressed, with strong constriction at the center, transverse section elliptical or diamond-shaped.
Section [Microcosmarium]: Cell surface smooth or dotted or punctated; semicells polygonal (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).

Species: Cell body octagonal in shape, 23-24 μm long, 17-18 μm wide, isthmus 5.6 μm wide, L/W=1.4; semicells nearly hexagonal; cell wall smooth; apical view elliptical (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).
