Oligohymenophorea: Hymenostoamtida: Glaucomidae

Glaucoma scintillans
Ehrenberg, 1830

Glaucoma Genus: Cell body ovoid or ellipsoid; cytostome about 1/4 the body length, near anterior end, elliposoid, with inconspicuous undulating membrane on right and three membranellae on left; ciliation uniform; 30-40 ciliary rows; macronucleus rounded; a single micronucleus; a contractile vacuole; fresh water (Kudo, 1966). Long axis of opening to oral cavity and polykinetids at ~45 degree angle to long axis of body (Illustrated Guide, 1985).
Species: 45-73 μm long (How to know the protozoa, 1979). Ovoid; 45-75 μm long; U-shaped cytostome, about 1/4 the body length, oblique; ectoplasmic flange and 3 membranellae conspicuous; a contractile vacuole in posterior one-third; macronucleus oval, central; a single micronucleus; fresh water (Kudo, 1966).

Glaucoma scintillans, cell body 52 μm long, 30 μm wide, cytostome 12 μm long, cysts 13 μm in diam., long axis of oral cavity slanted at about 45 degree angle to long axis of the cell body, x 400, x 640, Saitama Pref., Japan, 1999, by Y. Tsukii
