Subgenus [Eucosmarium]: Cell body dorso-ventrally compressed, with strong constriction at the center, transverse section elliptical or diamond-shaped.
Section [Pyramidatae]: Cell surface smooth; semicells pyramidal with flattened apex or trapezoid (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).
