Family: Unicells or colonies of non-fixed number of cells; cell body variable in shape; one or more chloroplasts variable in shape; asexual reproduction by autospore or autocoenobium (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).
Genus & Species [ M. tosaensis ]: Colonies of 4 cells, frequently developed to composite colonies of 16 (=4 x 4) cells; cells rhomboidally arranged and separated from one another in the gelatinous coat; colonies covered by a thick gelatinous material, sometimes with radiating fibrils; cell body broad ellipsoidal, 20-25 μm long, 12-15 μm wide; parietal chloroplasts numerous, small, disc-shaped (Photomicrographs of the Freshwater Algae, 1984).
