Cosmarium clevei
(Lundell) Lütkemüller
= Actinotaenium clevei (Lundell) Teiling ?

Cosmarium clevei Genus: Unicellular; variable in shape; a constriction at the center of the cell body; mostly longer than wide; flattened; each semicell hemispherical, spherical, ellipsoidal, rectangular, pyramidal or kidney-shaped; no apical indentation.
Subgenus [ Dysphinctium ]: Cell body cylindrical or dumbbell-shaped, dorso-ventrally not compressed, transverse section circular .
Section [ Actinotaenium ]: Cell body cylindrical, slightly constricted at the center, cell surface smooth or dotted or punctated (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).

Species: Semicells semi-spindle shaped, 67-117 μm long, 25-45 μ wide, L/W=2.5-3.5; cell wall dotted (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).

Cosmarium clevei (Lundell) Lütkemüller, large variety (or C. turgidum var. ovatum Nordstedt ?), cell body 200 μm long, 77 μm wide, L/W=2.6, isthmus 75 μm wide, cell size similar to that of Cosmarium turgidum but constriction not so strong as that of C. turgidum, x 400, x 640, Kozuki Pond, Kinashi, Takamatsu city, Kagawa Pref., Japan, November 2002 by Y.
