Family: Colonies consisting of a fixed number of cells (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).
Genus: Colony spherical in shape, consisting of 64 or 32 cells arranging at its perphery; a large inner cavity present; each cell embedded within a gelatinous matrix; four small asexual (somatic) cells located at the posterior end of the colony; with two flagella; chloroplast cup-shaped; pyrenoids absent; stigma conspicous, located at anterior half of the cell body; 3 or 4 contractile vacoules anterior (Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa 9, Chlorophyta I, 1983).
