Subfamily: Cell division occurs at central constriction.

Genus: Cell body short, radiate in shape; apical view of the cell, triangular, polygonal, ellipsoidal or spindle-shaped; zygospores formed outside of mother cells (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).
