棘針綱　Acantharea

規則的に配列した放射状の棘があり，それらは細胞の中心部で結合する。 棘は硫酸ストロンチウム（strontium sulfate）でできている。
細胞は薄いカプセル状の膜で包まれている。

ポリキスティナ（多泡綱）、パエオダリア（濃彩綱）、アカンタリア（棘針綱）の３綱は海産でプランクトン的生活をするグループ。 これらはかつて放散虫綱あるいは放散虫目（Radiolaria）としてひとつのグループにまとめられてい たが、電子顕微鏡観察の結果から、これらの類似性は収斂進化の結果であって、おたがいの関係は うすいことがわかってきた。

アカントキアズマ目 　Holacanthida	中心を通る棘針が10本ある。単純に交差するのみ。
アンフィリチウム目 　Symphyacanthida	中央部で融合した棘針が20本。
コナコン目 　Chaunacanthida	ゆるく結合した20本の棘針がある。
アカントメトラ目 　（放射棘虫類） 　Arthracanthida	中央部にピラミッド状の構造。20本の棘針。
