Family: Filamentous algae attached to a substrate at base, differentiation of axis-branch structure variable; cell body cylindrical, spherical or elongated ellipsoidal, with one or several plate-like chloroplasts; pyrenoids one to several in number or absent; terminal cells tapered or rounded at its end (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).
Genus: Filament with branching; cell body cylindrical; a single chloroplast plate-like, slightly curved, with 1 to several pyrenoids; apical cells pointed or drawn out as hairly projections; no difference between axial and branching filaments; forming a large clump attached on a substrate (Guide book to the "Photomicrographs of the Freshwater Algae", 1998).
