Genus: Colony (coenobium) broad ellipsoidal or spherical, consisting of 16 (rarely 4, 8 or 32) cells; cells located at perphery of the coenobium, separated from each other by embedded in a swollen sack; cell body lens-shaped or half spherical when matured; with two flagella; chloroplast dish- or bowl-shaped; pyrenoids present/absent; stigma large; nucleus centrally located; 4 to 8 contractile vacuoles; sexual reproduction by isogamy (Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa 9, Chlorophyta I, 1983).
