Genus: Planktonic; colony of 128 or 64 cells located at the periphery of a gelatinous matrix; 1/5 or 1/4 of the cells small, non-reproductive distinct from other large reproductive cells; cell body nearly spherical; a single chloroplast cup-shaped, with a single or many pyrenoids (Guide book to the "Photomicrographs of the Freshwater Algae", 1998).
