Encyclopedia : Interspecific hybrids

(African strain of Ipomoea nil x Ipomoea pupurea) x Japanese strain of Ipomoea nil

Since 1976, the author has been crossbreeding various cultivarieties of varied morning glory and large-flowered morning glory in large quantities with descendants of the African strain of the morning glory, Ipomoea nil x Ipomoea purpurea as an interbridge. Especially the white part of the corolla margin began to extend along the midpetaline band (You) to the inner direction and arrived at the flower tube finally by repeated additions of the marginal white characteristics. This is the birth of a strain called "Haneguruma" ("Impeller"). The flower of this hybrid morning glory came to give the impression of brightness due to this due to this extended white band. The author named this new character Youjiro (Ray white) in 1979. The author then crossed the hybrid plant with Japanese morning glories repeatedly, resulting in a high level of breeding to what I now call Youjiro (Ray white) morning glory. Besides, new flower forms and designs such as quail spots, the ray flow, and the feathering double were produced.
